Bullmobile has been chewing up its front tire so I brought it in for an alignment. They tell me it has a bad ball joint on the driver’s side. That’ll explain the damage to the tire. The alignment shop want to charge me ~$200 for it which seems alright. I have an appointment on Tuesday with my normal mechanic to install rear struts and springs so I might just see if he can do it then and reschedule the alignment.

Just didn’t have the balls to get your car aligned today, eh?

Usually the fun comes after the rubber gets put on.

$200 for balljoint and alignment? That sounds about right, alignments are $100 themselves.

Nah $200 for the ball joint that’s parts + labor.

Oh.
I am continually amazed by how much money I save doing things myself. I changed the upper balljoint on my dd a few months ago. The whole A-arm was $50 and 3 bolts. I know people have to get paid for their labor, it’s just always surprising to me how much that adds to the fix.

The trick is having a lift or at least good stands, for the one time in three that the ball joint and spindle just will not go together straight...

Yeah, I think my mechanic will do it for cheaper than the alignment place. I never have the time to do this kinda stuff myself. When I have a few hours the last thing I really want to do is fight a ball joint of a pair of struts onto my dd.

I understand that, I’ve just always done my own work and am constantly amazed when I hear a quote from a mechanic. My reaction to a vehicle repair over $100 (and that’s just in parts, just bought shocks a few days ago) I’m pretty sure I won’t be sending it to a mechanic anytime soon. I’m just now starting to get into the mindset of buying the $50 part that’ll take a few minutes versus the $25 part that I’ll be struggling with for an hour or two, like my balljoint example earlier. I don’t fault people who don’t want to spend the time, I’m just not there. That, and it’s either spend the time doing it myself, or spend the time waiting for the mechanic to do it and/or traveling to/from the garage, and I hate just sitting around.

I can see my mechanic’s place from my office window so I just drop off the car and walk across the street and go to work like a normal day.
